Windows Errors: Find the Cause & Fix
Search Windows error codes and troubleshoot problems with Windows Update, installation, Microsoft Store, activation, networking and system components.
How do you troubleshoot a Windows error?
Start with the exact error code and the action that triggered it. The same Windows symptom can have different causes depending on whether it appears during an update, startup, installation, activation, sign-in or while opening an application. Check the error context before resetting Windows, editing the registry or making other major system changes.

QUICK DIAGNOSIS
When Does the Windows Error Appear?
The timing of an error can help determine what to investigate first.
| When It Happens | Start By Checking |
|---|---|
| During Windows Update | The exact update code, available storage, update services and Microsoft’s documented guidance |
| Immediately after startup | Startup components, recent changes, drivers and system files |
| While installing software | Installer requirements, permissions, storage and installation logs |
| Microsoft Store only | Store services, account, licensing and app installation state |
| After a recent change | The update, driver, application or configuration change immediately preceding the error |
How to Use a Windows Error Code
When Windows displays a hexadecimal code such as 0x80070005, save the complete code rather than searching only for words such as “Windows update failed.” The code can help identify the Windows component or condition associated with the failure.
Also record what you were doing when it appeared. A code encountered during Windows Update may require different troubleshooting from a similar-looking failure produced by an application or installer.
Avoid deleting system folders, downloading unknown “repair” utilities, changing registry values or resetting Windows merely because a generic guide recommends it. Diagnose the error first and prefer documented, reversible steps.
Windows Error Guides
Individual LogCure guides will appear here as the Windows troubleshooting library grows. Each guide focuses on the exact error, when it occurs and the troubleshooting steps relevant to that condition.
HOW LOGCURE APPROACHES WINDOWS ERRORS
Evidence Before Troubleshooting
- Microsoft documentation is prioritized when it documents the error or procedure.
- An official error meaning is distinguished from a possible explanation.
- Safer and reversible troubleshooting steps come before disruptive ones.
- Instructions identify the Windows version when the procedure differs.
- Guides can be revised when Windows behavior or Microsoft’s documentation changes.
